The course is focused on the evolution of the British epistolary novel from the beginning of the 18th century to the present day. A view across centuries and genres gives students an opportunity to revisit a variety of literary trends and genres, from the Enlightenment satire and sentimental literature, via Gothic novel to the postmodern redefinition of the epistolary form. Seminar reading includes classics such as Samuel Richardson's Pamela or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, William Golding's Rites of Passage, and also a recent innovation of the form, an email novel and corporate satire by Lucy Kellaway, Martin Lukes: Who Moved My Blackberry?
