Lexicology II aims to provide students with a general view of theory and practice of the description of the English lexicon. Out of the two main areas of synchronic lexicological study – word-formation and lexical semantics – this course focuses on the former, i.e. word-formation, which deals with the description of processes by which new lexical items enter the lexicon. The lexicon will also be looked at from the point of view of its dynamics and the ability of innovation. Key concepts in stylistics and distinctive features of English functional styles shall be covered as they are necessarily related to the lexis of the language.
